Any Nokia phone, from any region, also supports english. Just go to the Settings menu and change the language to English, that should solve some of your problems.
Buying phones from China to be used in Europe is plain stupid. For example your device will likely not have WLAN/WiFi since the Chinese standard is not compatible with the one used in the rest of the world. For the same reason it may not be possible for you to install UK specific firmware on it, as it was not designed for that Chinese type hardware. Not to mention the chance that your “chinese N97″ is not an N97 at all, just one of the famous Chinese clones running some crappy software.
Go to http://www.nokia.com/support and find the nearest Nokia Care centre in your area. Then take the phone at their service point, if somebody can help you it will be them.
